10 Dead in a Mass Shooting in Los Angeles After Lunar New Year Festival

Police have confirmed that a shooting that happened late Saturday in the east Los Angeles neighborhood of Monterey Park resulted in at least 10 fatalities.

The shooting took place at a company on West Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and the male shooter is still on the loose.

One witness told the LA Times that they thought the shooting took place at a nearby dance club, according to multiple media reports. The shooting reportedly took place in Monterey Park shortly after 10 p.m. after a significant Lunar New Year celebration festival.

After the news broke, a representative of the local Los Angeles government tweeted their condolences.

He tweeted, "Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones tonight in our neighboring city, Monterey Park, where a mass shooting just occurred.". One of the largest Asian populations in Los Angeles County can be found in Monterey Park, and many people were out in the streets to celebrate the Lunar New Year. ".

There are still many questions about the shooting. A nearby restaurant owner named Seung Won Choi, a witness, told the LA Times that three people "rushed" into his establishment and instructed him to lock the door.

According to the newspaper, the locals informed Choi that there was a shooter in the area who was armed with a machine gun and had a large supply of ammo.

Thousands of people had gathered in Monterey Park earlier in the day for the Lunar New Year festival. One of the biggest Lunar New Year celebrations in Southern California began on Saturday and will last for two days, according to the AP.

According to the Monterey Park government website, previous Lunar New Year celebrations in Monterey Park "drew crowds estimated at over 100,000 visitors per day from all over the Southern California area."
