England begin their World Cup 2022 campaign with a Group B encounter against Iran on Monday.

The Three Lions will start their first ever competitive fixture with the Iranians as favourites and will be confident of the three points ahead of tougher assignments against USA and Wales.

Iran are managed by former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz, who is managing the nation for the third time in a World Cup.

The Portuguese veteran has made the Iranians a dogged team to play against in recent years and they boast a number of dangerous players in the forward areas such as Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Sardar Azmoun, and Mehdi Taremi.

England’s opening game of the World Cup against Iran will take place on Monday, November 21 at 1pm.

The match will be staged at the 45,000-capacity Khalifa International Stadium in Doha.

Gareth Southgate has confirmed Kyle Walker and James Maddison will both miss the game.

At their pre-match press conference on Sunday, Southgate said: "In terms of player availability, everyone but James Maddison is available.

"It's a little early for Kyle Walker, but he's been training with the team. It's ahead of what we thought it would be at this stage, so that's a positive.
